LEAGUE NOTES

CART: CART announced its 20-race schedule for '99
yesterday, marking the largest number of races the circuit
has had in a single season. Chicago was added to the
roster, with an August 22 race at the new Chicago Motor
Speedway (CART). In Indianapolis, Robin Miller wrote on
Alex Zanardi leaving the CART circuit and called him "almost
irreplaceable." Zanardi has become CART's "pulse and
     personality" (STAR-NEWS, 9/26). In L.A., Bill Schlotter
wrote that with Zanardi's departure, CART is "left a tour
much in need of an identity" (L.A. DAILY NEWS, 9/25).
ABL: On CBS SportsLine, Michelle Smith wrote that the
ABL is offering all nine of its current teams and three
projected expansion franchises to investors willing to
purchase team operating rights. ABL CEO Gary Cavalli said
that the league is "going to close deals on three teams in
the next three weeks, with a fourth possibly in October."
If the league can sell operating rights at $1.5M for each
team, it could mean $18M for the league (SportsLine, 9/28).
