STEINBRENNER SAYS TALKS WITH NEW JERSEY HAVE BEEN "GOING ON"

          As Bronx Borough President Fernando Ferrer offered a
     new plan to keep the Yankees in the Bronx, team Owner George
     Steinbrenner said that talks have been taking place with NJ
     officials, according to Kappstatter, Lombardi & Cyphers of
     the N.Y. DAILY NEWS.  Steinbrenner: "There are things going
     on with New Jersey ... there have been discussions -- you
     know, talks."  Steinbrenner's comments "lend credence" to
     reports that he met this summer with Trenton lobbyists
     Harold Hodes and Roger Bodman to "discuss incentives for
     moving the team."  Meanwhile, N.Y. Mayor Rudy Giuliani
     called Ferrer's plan for a renovated Yankee Stadium "a
     warmed over plan" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 9/29).  Giuliani said
     that Ferrer's plan "appeared similar to a plan that the city
     commissioned in 1994 to dissuade the Yankees from leaving
     the Bronx," which Steinbrenner rejected (N.Y. TIMES, 9/29).
