In N.Y., Joel Sherman criticizes MLB for not properly
honoring the legacy of Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa's HR
chase and the consecutive-games streak of Cal Ripken: "In an
indelible year when baseball has renewed that bond with the
nation, the sport's management has so far blown a chance to
stretch that link into the future." For the two records, he
proposes building 62 Little League fields and endowing 2,632
college scholarships over 17 years. MLB COO Paul Beeston
said MLB "will do something. There is nothing definite
yet." Sherman: "It is a shame baseball did not have the
sense to think short and long range at the same time" (N.Y.
POST, 9/22)....BRANDWEEK's Terry Lefton reports the ABL is
closing its NYC sales office, with "only two employees"
being affected (BRANDWEEK, 9/21 issue)....While Formula One
Chair Bernie Ecclestone denied he had any interest in a bid
for Manchester United, a source said he has had "some
involvement and interest in the idea for a European Super
League." But Media Partners, the Milan-based marketing
group, looked to "distance themselves from the reports
suggesting that Ecclestone was bankrolling their" Super
League project, saying that they alone "are funding the
European Super League project" (Mult., 9/21).
