HAPPY HANAKA? NEW EXEC TAKES OVER FOR JACK SMITH AT TSA

JACK SMITH "stepped down Tuesday" as CEO of The Sports
Authority (TSA), the company he founded in '87, according to
David Altaner of the Ft. Lauderdale SUN-SENTINEL. Smith
will remain as Chair, and Vice Chair MARTIN HANAKA was named
to replace him. Altaner writes that the move "didn't come
as a total surprise, since Hanaka had been scheduled to take
over" as CEO if a proposed purchase deal by Venator Group
had closed. Hanaka joined TSA in February from Staples,
where he resigned as President & COO (SUN-SENTINEL, 9/16).
