FILA DROPS CHRIS WEBBER DUE TO "OFF-COURT" PROBLEMS

Fila USA has "terminated" its endorsement contract with
Kings F Chris Webber because of his "recent off-court
problems," according to sources familiar with the situation
cited by Josh Barr of the WASHINGTON POST. Fila USA Dir of
PR Meredith Geisler said the company would not comment on
the situation. Webber was recently detained in Puerto Rico
for marijuana possession, and a source said that Fila execs
considered the matter "carefully -- including the fact that
Webber was detained while on [the] promotional trip
sponsored by Fila -- before terminating the three-year,
multimillion dollar contract" it signed with him in March of
'97. The source also said that the contract contained "a
good-conduct clause and he will not receive any of the
remaining money he is owed." Webber's agent Fallasha Erwin
did not return calls for comment (WASHINGTON POST, 8/28).
