MLB is "investigating the possible role" of AL umpires
in the sale of baseballs used in the perfect game pitched by
Yankees P David Wells on May 17. MLB officials "confirmed
the investigation yesterday but declined to identify the
umpires" (N.Y. TIMES, 8/21). On CNNSI.com, Tom Verducci
writes that MLB is "taking steps to prevent bogus claims" by
fans claiming to possess the ball hit to break Roger Maris'
HR record. MLB will "provide extra security personnel in
the outfield seats if one of the sluggers gets to 60. And
they have considered marking a supply of balls with
individual numbers and a secret stamp that shows up only
under a special light" (CNNSI.com, 8/19)....IHL President &
CEO Doug Moss is interviewed in USA TODAY where he says the
league has "to get younger." Moss: "This league has taken
some knocks. Some have called this the old man's league or
the no-hit league. Some has been overblown. What we will
do is rid ourselves of that (image)" (USA TODAY, 8/21).
...CFL Hamilton Tiger Cats Chair David Macdonald said the
league "has to do something to educate" immigrants in
Toronto and Vancouver if attendance figures are to increase
in those two cities (Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 8/21).
