          Boston Globe columnist MIKE BARNICLE resigned from the
     newspaper yesterday after "new questions arose over his
     credibility."  He agreed to quit after "being unable to
     verify the facts" from an October 8, 1995, article on two
     children who were cancer patients at Children's Hospital
     (BOSTON GLOBE, 8/20)....Attorney ROBERT SHAPIRO has filed
     suit against DARRYL STRAWBERRY alleging that he failed to pay
     about $100,000 in fees for a contract settlement Shapiro
     negotiated with the Dodgers four years ago (N.Y. DAILY NEWS,
     8/20)....KOBE BRYANT, in Australia for a series of camps, was
     profiled in the SYDNEY MORNING HERALD.  MICHAEL JORDAN "may
     be the king, but in Kobe Bryant, basketball has a ready-made
     prince" (SYDNEY MORNING HERALD, 8/19)....Figure skaters TARA
     LIPINSKI and ILIA KULIK have broken away from Tom Collins'
     Champions on Ice tour to join IMG's Stars on Ice.  Lipinski's
     one-year deal (plus an option) is believed to pay her close
     to $2M (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 8/20)....JIM BROWN will play AL
     PACINO's defensive coordinator in OLIVER STONE's upcoming
     film, "On Any Given Sunday" (AKRON BEACON JOURNAL, 8/20).
