TBS FORCED TO GO APE FOLLOWING PGA CHAMPIONSHIP BLACKOUT

          Golf fans tuning into first-round coverage of the PGA
     Championship on TBS yesterday "might have thought they'd
     gone bananas," as the station inserted "spoofs of award-
     winning movies ... featuring chimpanzees in suits, dresses
     and wigs" for about 25 minutes, according to Steve Zipay of
     NEWSDAY. At about 4:35pm ET, a power outage at Sahalee
     Country Club in WA caused TBS to lose its feed. While a
     tape of last year's first round would normally have been
     used, last year's PGA was rain delayed at this point, and
     TBS spokesperson Tom Hughes said that the rain delay scroll
     on last year's tape "would have been misleading." Viewers
     were updated when power was restored. Upon returning to air,
     TBS's Ernie Johnson said, "Now that the monkey business is
     behind us ..." (NEWSDAY, 8/14). In N.Y., Richard Sandomir:
     "What better fill-in than thespian chimps parodying 'Gone
     With the Wind' in 'Monkeyed Movies'? (N.Y. TIMES, 8/14).
     TBS's Hughes: "TBS is an entertainment network. We kept the
     public entertained" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 8/14).
