PRENTICE LANDS KEY BACKER IN ROYALS BID: KAUFFMAN'S DAUGHTER

Julia Irene Kauffman, daughter of Royals Founder Ewing
Kauffman, "has decided to invest with Miles Prentice, the
New Yorker who continues to beef up his bid to buy the
baseball team," according to Charles Crumpley of the K.C.
STAR. Neither Kauffman nor Prentice could be reached for
comment, but "two sources familiar with the Royals sale
process have confirmed that Kauffman plans to invest with
the Prentice group." One of the sources said her investment
would be a "significant" amount of money. Kauffman's
promised involvement means three "prominent Kansas Citians"
are now known to have signed on with Prentice. The others
are banker R. Crosby Kemper Jr. and banker James Nutter Jr.
Prentice's main competitor, Lamar Hunt, said yesterday that
his Hunt-Western Resources group "had not yet increased its
offer, which the Royals earlier had rejected." The six
directors of the Royals board will meet today via conference
call. A team spokesperson said that no sale announcement
was planned, but that could change (K.C. STAR, 8/14).
