JUST A CONVERSATION? TANENBAUM SAYS LEAFS "NOT BUYING" JAYS

          Maple Leafs Minority Owner Larry Tanenbaum "met three
     months ago" with execs of John Labatt Ltd. and MLB "to
     discuss buying" the Blue Jays, sources told Geoff Baker of
     the TORONTO STAR.  Tanenbaum "insisted last night that while
     he spoke with the officials in question, there are no plans
     to take over the ball club."  Tanenbaum: "I can never say
     that something will never happen.  All I can say is it is
     not happening. ... I can absolutely, categorically tell you
     that the Maple Leafs are not buying the [Blue Jays]." 
     Sources said that the "main snag" has been concern by the
     Ontario Teachers Pension Plan Board and Toronto-Dominion
     Bank, both Leafs ownership partners (TORONTO STAR, 8/14).
