          Faced with "subscription cancellations, criticisms from
     readers and media heavyweights ... and a potential loss of
     ... major advertiser" Staples, the Boston Globe "backed
     down" from asking for columnist MIKE BARNICLE's resignation.
     The paper will now suspend him two months without pay (WALL
     STREET JOURNAL, 8/12).  Barnicle attended last night's Red
     Sox game and was "cheered" (BOSTON GLOBE, 8/12)....Pocket
     Books has released "Big League, Big Time: The Birth of the
     Arizona Diamondbacks, The Billion-Dollar Business of Sports,
     and the Power of the Media in America" by LEN SHERMAN (THE
     DAILY)....BOBBY RAHAL was a guest last night on the "Late
     Show" with DAVID LETTERMAN.  Letterman, who is a part-owner
     of Rahal's CART team said, "The best thing about having him
     on the show is whenever he's here, his sponsor, Miller Beer,
     sends us two dozen cases of free beer" (CBS, 8/11).
