RUMORS FLY, BUT BLUE JAYS SAY THEY ARE NOT ON THE BLOCK

While "rumours circulated" that the Blue Jays were
close to being sold, the team's owner, Interbrew SA, said
that "it had no offers to buy the franchise," according to
Larry Millson of the Toronto GLOBE & MAIL. Blue Jays Chair
& CEO Sam Pollock: "As of today, they have nothing."
Interbrew withdrew the team from the market last October,
but Millson reports there are "indications" that the sales
effort has resumed (Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 8/12). In Toronto,
Geoff Baker reports that the name of Don McDougall, a former
Labatt's President, has surfaced as a potential buyer "less
than a year after an ownership group he was a part of, led
by Toronto lawyer Lawrence Dale, failed to acquire the team"
from Interbrew (TORONTO STAR, 8/12). Also in Toronto, Bob
Elliott reports that McDougall and Sun Media CEO Paul
Godfrey "are part of a group which hopes to purchase the
Jays." McDougall: "Am I interested? Yes, I've always been
interested in the Blue Jays. But Labatt has yet to indicate
that they want to sell the team" (TORONTO SUN, 8/12).
