MCLEAN, KUCHAR, ROSE ALL REPORTEDLY IN IMG'S CROSSHAIRS

IMG has used an approach "similar" to the one it used
to sign Tiger Woods in its "attempt" to get Univ. of MN
golfer James McLean to turn pro, according to Charley
Walters of the ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS. Walters writes that
IMG "has indicated" that it would offer Univ. of MN golf
coach John Means a job should McLean, a freshman from
Australia who won this year's NCAA championship, sign with
the agency. Means: "How dumb is that? They asked if I
would be interested in working for them, and I said no."
Means said that "no salary was mentioned," adding, "I didn't
even want to go down that road." McLean is currently in
summer school at Univ. of MN and "insists he'll return" to
school next year. Walters also reported that "the word is"
IMG is "preparing to offer" U.S. Amateur Champion and GA
Tech junior Matt Kuchar $2M to sign, and "is also working to
sign" 17-year-old British star Justin Rose (ST. PAUL PIONEER
PRESS, 7/27). Rose reportedly signed with U.K.-based
Carnegie Sports Int'l when he turned pro (THE DAILY).
