CONVERSE SPRE TO DO WHAT THEY WANT; AIMS TO PROTECT ITS STAR

          MA-based Converse Inc. "was within its rights to
     terminate its endorsement agreement" with Warriors G Latrell
     Sprewell after he was suspended for choking his coach, P.J.
     Carlesimo, arbitrator Robert Holtzman has ruled, according
     to Scott Soshnick of BLOOMBERG NEWS.  Financial terms of
     Sprewell's grievance were not disclosed.  Converse notified
     Sprewell on December 4 that it was terminating his contract,
     two days after the incident (BLOOMBERG NEWS, 7/23).
          COWBOYS CASE: In a statement, Converse Chair Glenn Rupp
     said that its pending litigation with the Cowboys "pertains
     to the Cowboys use of a five-pointed star on footwear. 
     Converse owns the usage rights to the ... five-pointed star
     on any footwear products.  Converse is not attempting to
     block the Cowboys' use of the star logo on team uniforms,
     helmets or merchandise other than footwear" (Converse).
