THE MAN WHO STARTED IT ALL: ESPN SPECIAL PROFILES BABE RUTH

          ESPN's "Outside the Lines: Babe Ruth's Larger Than Life
     Legacy" examined Ruth's career and was narrated by actor Joe
     Don Baker who said, "Ruth was the first athlete to cash in,
     in a big way, on his mass appeal."  Darci Ross, CMG
     Worldwide President, which markets Ruth's name and image:
     "He is the number one deceased sports personality in
     licensing and marketing."  Ross: "Ruth is number two or
     three on the top of the list, and that's compared to James
     Dean, Elvis Presley, Marilyn Monroe."  Currently, Ruth has
     400 licensed products and more than 1,000 advertising
     connections, which earn his heirs "more than" $1M a year
     (ESPN, 7/21).  As part of ESPN SportsZone's week-long
     feature on Ruth in conjunction with last night's "Outside
     The Lines," Ted Williams will chat on SportsZone today at
     3:00pm ET.  While talking about Ruth, SportsZone will link
     to Williams' official site and provide an e-mail address for
     anyone with information about his autographed Ruth baseball
     that was stolen from his home in FL about 25 years ago. 
     Williams is offering a $10,000 reward (THE DAILY).
