With this year's Goodwill Games in N.Y. "doing better
financially" than the first three Games, USA TODAY's Rudy
Martzke writes that Ted Turner "will go ahead with the fifth
Goodwill Games." Turner spokesperson Greg Hughes said the
announcement will come at a Saturday news conference. The
first three Games lost "more than" $100M combined. The next
Goodwill Games will be held in 2001 -- "to avoid" the 2002
Olympics -- in either Asia or Australia (USA TODAY, 7/15).
FIGHT NIGHT: The 5,200-seat Theater at MSG has sold
"about half" of its tickets for Saturday's Roy Jones Jr.-Lou
Del Valle fight (Michael Katz, N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 7/15).
IN THE ZONE? ESPN Zone Dir of Marketing & Sales Scott
Dickey said that Philadelphia "is definitely on the list of
possible expansion cities for the venture," and that the
criteria for launching in a new city includes population,
tourism, traffic and, "most importantly, the type of sports
town." Zone VP & GM William Freeman: "We think Philadelphia
is certainly a market that we can find a niche in." Kevin
Feeley, a spokesperson for Mayor Ed Rendell, said he "was
unfamiliar with the Zone moving to Philadelphia," but that
"the concept seemed appealing" (PHILA. DAILY NEWS, 7/15).
