PLAN B-ING FOR THE FUTURE: ROONEY WANTS TO GET STARTED

With Thursday's approval of Plan B by Allegheny
County's Regional Asset District Board, officials from the
Steelers and the Carnegie Science Center plan to meet with
city and county leaders "to resolve a dispute over exactly
where" the new stadium will be built, according to Tom
Barnes of the PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE. Steelers President
Art Rooney said that he "believed the matter could be
resolved by the end of the year." Rooney: "We would like to
be in the new stadium in August 2001. We've got to start
immediately with the design phase." While an architect
hasn't been chosen, K.C.-based HOK is a "leading contender."
The Steelers are hoping that the state will provide its
promised share of stadium funding "within six months." The
Rooneys have not said how they plan to raise the $76.5M they
have pledged for the project, and Barnes wrote that PSLs
"might be sold as one way of getting the money." Rooney
also said that he wants the stadium to be used for more than
10 Steelers games a year, including concerts and possibly a
pro soccer team (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 7/11).
