BETTMAN SAYS CONDITIONS MUST BE RIGHT FOR OLYMPIC RETURN

          NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman told the N.Y. POST's Jay
     Greenberg that the league will wait for the outcome of its
     discussions with the IOC and NBC before committing to league
     participation in the 2002 Salt Lake Games. Bettman said if
     his "concerns aren't met" by the organizations, "it will be
     easy to go back to the Board of Governors and recommend that
     we not go." Bettman: "But I don't want this put negatively.
     ... We will do it again if we can do it in a way that makes
     sense."  Among the NHL's requests: a better TV schedule;
     access for NHL personnel to the Olympic Village; a schedule
     that allows the NHL to "shorten its dark period" from the 17
     days required to go to Nagano; and the use of the Delta
     Center, not a "smaller arena being built for the Olympics,"
     for games involving the U.S. and Canada (N.Y. POST, 6/28).
