LEAGUE NOTES

Chris Evert credited the WTA Tour for its "press and
marketing" of its players: "Hingis on the cover of GQ and
Kournikova on Rolling Stone magazine, the Williams sisters
in Vogue ... I think the WTA is doing a great job in the
press and marketing the women and I'm almost thinking the
ATP should start to take notes." John McEnroe: "The women
are helping the overall sport, and that's what we all
ultimately should be thinking about. ... I never thought I'd
say this -- if it turns out that the best situation for
tennis in general is to have the women and the men play
together, then we should consider it" (THE DAILY).
MLB: USA TODAY examines the possibility of MLB staging
an int'l competition. Turner Sports Senior VP Kevin
O'Malley said that his network "would be interested" in a
baseball World Cup, as would their "competitors." O'Malley:
"It'd have a high curiosity value." Dean Bonham, President
of CO-based The Bonham Group, suggests that "corporate
America would be very interested and they wouldn't have any
problem finding a broadcaster" (USA TODAY, 6/26).
