DUMPING ON OVITZ'S SITE: IS AREA IN JEOPARDY OVER WASTE?

The Carson, CA, site that Michael Ovitz wants to build
an NFL stadium on "is tainted by an incredibly tangled
ownership history and is filled with a messy combination of
contaminants," according to Ted Johnson of LOS ANGELES
magazine. Apparently, "an estimated 1.2 million gallons of
solvents, oil-drilling mud and tank-bottom residue were
dumped there as late as the 1960s," and while past
developers have tried to build on the site, all attempts
have "stalled" as they had to come up with $26M to pay for a
state-supervised cleanup. Johnson writes, "Looks like
Ovitz's legendary 'packaging' skills will come in handy
after all" (LOS ANGELES, 7/98 issue).
