K.C. STAR OBTAINS TAX FORMS DETAILING CEDRIC DEMPSEY'S PAY

Federal tax forms obtained by the K.C. STAR show that
NCAA Exec Dir Cedric Dempsey's total compensation increased
by more than $150,000 in one year, bringing Dempsey's total
compensation for the FY ending August 31, '97 -- including
benefits, deferred compensation and taxable expenses -- to
$647,332, according to Steve Rock of the K.C. STAR. Former
NCAA President Gene Corrigan, who determined Dempsey's
salary hike along with NCAA Exec Committee Chair Sam Smith:
"We both said at the time, 'We may be criticized for this.'
It was a pretty sizable jump. But it was the right thing to
do. We didn't want (Dempsey) to have any temptations to go
after anything else" (K.C. STAR, 6/23).
FINAL FOUR FINALISTS: In San Antonio, Tim Griffin
