THE DEAL HUNTER: NIKE APOLOGIZES, PULLS AD AFTER CRITICISM

Nike has "pulled" a print ad which appeared in Outside
magazine, Outside's Buyers Guide and Backpacker, "that
portrayed hunters as dangerous," according to Tom Stienstra
of the S.F. EXAMINER. Author James Swan recently wrote a
letter to Nike protesting the ad that read: "You could get
mauled by a bear and die. You could get bit by a snake and
die. You could fall off a cliff and die. You could get
gored by bison and die. You could get shot by a hunter and
die. You could get attacked by fire ants and die. Or, you
could stay home on the couch, eat potato chips and die ...
Just Do It." Upon receiving Swan's letter last week, Nike
VP/Corporate Communications Kirk Stewart issued a formal
apology and wrote, "First, let me say that the last thing we
intended was to offend anyone" (S.F. EXAMINER, 6/21).
