FEELING SPICY ABOUT THEIR WINGS: RECORD CROWD GREETS CHAMPS

More than 1.2 million fans, "the largest crowd ever to
gather" in downtown Detroit, came out for the Red Wings'
Stanley Cup championship parade, according to Wilson, French
& Hurt of the DETROIT NEWS. At a ceremony in Hart Plaza
after the parade, Red Wings Owner Mike Ilitch told the fans
that the Red Wings players "are blue-collar guys, clean-cut
guys, good guys that set an example for the youth and the
families in this city" (DETROIT NEWS, 6/19). Yesterday's
parade "surpassed estimates of last year's Red Wings victory
parade by at least 200,000" (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 6/19).
BIG BOOST: Comerica Bank economist William Wilson
estimated the average parade-goer spent more than $20 on
parking, food and souvenirs, giving Detroit's economy a $20M
boost. But merchants looking to profit from the parade
"were among the few people disappointed with the
celebration, as sales of Red Wings paraphernalia fell short
of last year's totals" (Janet Adamy, FREE PRESS, 6/19).
