In Milwaukee, Tom Haudricourt reports that Acting MLB
Commissioner Bud Selig "insists he indeed will step down
some time this year." Selig said those who think he will
assume the post permanently "will be disappointed"

travel to Austria September 11-18 to participate in the NHL
Int'l Challenge '98, a four-game series that will also
feature another NHL team and two Austrian Elite League
teams. The Lightning will travel to Feldkirch, Austria, and
the second NHL team will visit Klagenfurt (NHL/NHLPA).
GOLF NOTES: A federal judge on Friday granted an IN
golfer "who suffers from a hip ailment an exemption that
allows him to use a golf cart in a local qualifier for the
U.S. Open." Ford Olinger was granted the temporary
injunction against the USGA (AP/N.Y. POST, 5/17)....Hale
Irwin, on perception that interest in the PGA Senior Tour
has dwindled: "Our attendance figures are up, our purses are
up, we have great sponsors. Everything about the Tour is
solid. You can argue TV ratings all you want to" ("Pro Golf
Weekly," CNN, 5/16)....CNN/SI's Jaime Diaz, on the USGA
possibly altering its rules regarding oversize drivers:
"Considering that [Callaway Golf] alone has more than seven
million oversized drivers in use, and that [Ely] Callaway
has demonstrated that he has both the money and the moxie to
go to court when he is wronged, the USGA had better be on
the firmest grounds before it makes a move" (CNN, 5/17).
