NAMES IN THE NEWS

          THE WHITE STUFF: In Baltimore, Milton Kent writes that
     "in a day and age when athletes invoke misplaced context
     when they are called on the stupid things they say," REGGIE
     WHITE "is bold enough to take the heat he is getting."  Kent
     adds that White is "not at all innocent," calling his
     remarks about minorities "reprehensible" (Baltimore SUN,
     4/30).  White is scheduled to speak today at a MI rally
     against a city ordinance that bans discrimination against
     gays and lesbians (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 4/30).
          OTHER NAMES: CNN's "Showbiz Today" profiled golfers
     PETER JACOBSEN, PAYNE STEWART and MARK LYE, who have
     released an album under the band name "Jake Trout and the
     Flounders."  Musicians making cameos on the multimedia CD
     include Hootie and the Blowfish's DARIUS RUCKER (CNN, 4/29).
     ...Actor JAMES WOODS will replace DON JOHNSON as host of
     "NASCAR'S NIGHT IN HOLLYWOOD -- A GOLDEN CELEBRATION," May 1
     in at the Wiltern Theatre (NASCAR)....DOUG FLUTIE, his wife
     and two children appeared on ABC's "GMA" to discuss their
     foundation of the DOUG FLUTIE JR. FOUNDATION FOR AUTISM. 
     Flutie, whose six-year-old son DOUG JR. is autistic, said,
     "I like the thought of Dougie having a legacy, that he can
     make a difference and there's a reason for him being the way
     he is.  And if now we can make a difference because of it,
     then it's all that much better" ("GMA," ABC, 4/30).
