Orioles Owner Peter Angelos is still trying to convince
fellow MLB owners to "focus their revenue-sharing program on
new stadium construction," according to Peter Schmuck of the
Baltimore SUN. Angelos "still feels that it would be a
better way to use the millions that are being transferred
from large-market to small-market clubs." Angelos has
"talked informally" to some owners about the idea and "could
bring it up" again when MLB begins to form a strategy for
its next CBA talks with the MLBPA. Angelos added that if
MLB "cannot find a way to upgrade the revenues of struggling
small-market teams and improve the level of on-field
talent," he would "support a radical plan to use the
revenue-sharing pool to buy out some struggling franchises
and reduce the number of major-league teams." Angelos: "I
think we're going in the wrong direction. There are more
teams going after players, which is driving up the cost of
players, and, in turn, driving up the cost of tickets and
concessions." Angelos: "Baseball is absolutely a bargain,
but I can't see it remaining a bargain" (SUN, 4/25).
