LIKE A ROLLING STONE, MAGS GO ON THEIR OWN W/SPORTS COVERAGE

Sports "is the flavor of the month in the magazine
industry" as two "unlikely publications are preparing
[their] first ever sports issues," according to Mary Huhn of
the N.Y. POST. Rolling Stone will publish its first annual
sports edition on May 22, and Conde Nast's men's magazine
Details will put out a May sports issue, with Michael Jordan
on the cover, a first for an athlete. It comes out April
     14. Muhammad Ali appears on the cover of May's GQ, which
calls him "The Athlete of the Century." Details Editor-in-
Chief Michael Caruso, on the sports focus: "For a young
men's magazine it makes perfect sense. For a music and pop
culture magazine, it's a bit of a stretch." But Rolling
Stone Managing Editor Bob Love said music "has become
intertwined with sports," and pointed to Shaquille O'Neal's
music interests. Rolling Stone's special sports issue will
feature Sports Hall of Fame Gallery, a photo portfolio,
pieces exploring the crossover between sports and pop
culture and profiles. Details has a piece on why Jordan
should retire, a story on snowboarder/mountain biker Shaun
Palmer, a piece on mascots and a piece by the Nets' Jayson
Williams on the NBA and Jordan (N.Y. POST, 4/1).
