FOX LIBERTY ON VERGE OF ACQUIRING SPEEDVISION, OUTDOOR LIFE

Fox Liberty Sports (FLS) "is negotiating to buy" a 35%
stake in the SpeedVision and Outdoor Life Channels for
"about" $100M, reports John Dempsey of DAILY VARIETY. FLS
could make the purchase "this week" from the three existing
owners, Cox Communications, Media One and Comcast. Dempsey
writes that under terms of the deal, FLS and Cox "would each
end up with" 35%, with Media One and Comcast dividing the
remaining 30%. Cox would "continue its role as the managing
partner" of the two channels, but a clause in the contract
would allow FLS "to increase its percentage to majority
ownership within the next four years." ESPN and CBS
SportsLine "looked at buying a stake" in the channels, but
"objected to keeping majority ownership in Cox's hands for
as long as four years" (DAILY VARIETY, 3/17).
