ANIMAL RIGHTS GROUP HAS A BEEF WITH THE NCAA OVER AD

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)
claims that an advertisement "urging men to go vegetarian"
was scheduled to appear in the official Final Four
Tournament Guide, "but was pulled at the last minute by NCAA
officials," according to Christina Ramirez of the SAN
ANTONIO EXPRESS-NEWS. The ad features a picture of a man
eating a hamburger and the words, "Don't be a whopper! Did
somebody say impotence!" The ad "urges men to go vegetarian
to avoid prostate cancer, impotence and other fat-related
ailments," and offers PETA's toll-free line for vegetarian
recipes. PETA's Bruce Friedrich said that the ad artwork
was submitted February 23, but PETA wasn't notified until
Monday that the NCAA considered the ad to be "bad timing in
light" of Oprah Winfrey's lawsuit in TX. NCAA Assistant Dir
of Promotions Cindy VanMatre: "We felt that the (ad) photo
was in poor taste. ... We felt that a lot of people would be
offended by the ad and that it was not in the best interests
     of higher education" (S.A. EXPRESS-NEWS, 3/13).
