In N.Y., Larry Brooks writes on the village incident
involving the U.S. men's hockey team: "Something about this
team went very, very wrong in Nagano. ... [T]his is a story
that's becoming bigger and bigger every day" (N.Y. POST,
2/26). Penguins Owner Howard Baldwin: "I just don't think
what happened at Nagano was the debacle for the NHL that
everyone is saying" (Pittsburgh POST-GAZETTE, 2/25).
OTHER NOTES: A survey of the Games, sponsored by
Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance, was based on the
responses of 40 athletes in Nagano. Of those, 73% felt the
Games had become too commercial while 53% said that
professional athletes should be allowed to compete in the
Olympics. Golf was the top sport those surveyed felt should
be added the Games. Beach volleyball was named the most as
the sport which should be dropped (Northwestern Mutual).
....In Toronto, Garth Woolsey writes on Roots' designation
as the official apparel sponsors of the Canadian Olympic
team: "Roots continues to get a terrific return on its
investment." He calls the Roots jackets and hats "very cool
and very hot at the same time" (TORONTO STAR, 2/26).
