SCHOOL DAZE: UNIV. OF WA INKS DEAL WITH PAUL ALLEN'S ASM

Paul Allen-owned Action Sports Media (ASM) has signed
an eight-year marketing deal with the Univ. of WA to market
and sell sponsorship packages for Husky athletics that will
include signage in five athletic venues, including Husky
Stadium. The deal also includes a new $5M video scoreboard
in Husky Stadium. Under terms of the deal, ASM guarantees
UW a minimum of $5M in revenue sharing payments over the
term of the agreement. All profits generated above ASM's
initial investment will be shared equally between the
university and ASM (ASM). In Seattle, Blaine Newnham wrote
that in addition to $10M from ASM, the school this week also
"rounded up" $4.7M by extending its radio deal with KOMO
through 2002 and earned $4.3M from an apparel deal with Nike
that also runs through 2002 (SEATTLE TIMES, 2/24).
AZ TREATY: Univ. of AZ President Peter Likins reached
"agreement" with Nike "that will allow the university to
sever ties with the company if it deliberately violates its
own Code of Conduct," according to Pila Martinez of the AZ
DAILY STAR. The deal, which would save the school "up to"
$3M a year by not paying for apparel and equipment itself,
will provide shoes, workout gear, uniforms and some
equipment to UA's 18 athletic teams (DAILY STAR, 2/24).
