LEAGUE NOTES

          Two "high-ranking" MLB officials "confirmed" that MLB
     "is investigating 'serious' charges of tampering levied by
     multiple teams" against the D'Backs.  One MLB official: "We
     are looking into numerous reports of potential tampering. 
     If these prove to be true, this would be a very serious
     situation" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 2/25)....ESPN's John Clayton
     warns not to expect the NFL's free-agency spending "to end."
     Clayton: "Some teams are hearing that next season's salary
     cap could jump another $11 million to around $63 million,
     particularly if the union and the owners settle" on a CBA
     extension (ESPN, 2/24)....Indiana high school senior Jamar
     Beasley is the newest member of Project 40, the joint
     venture between U.S. Soccer and MLS.  Beasley, 18, is the
     youngest player in the program, and will be assigned to the
     Revolution (MLS)....At a recent ATP player council meeting
     in Australia, a decision was made "to have a trial of on-
     court coaching during matches."  The experiment will be
     tried at "some lower-level" events (GLOBE & MAIL, 2/25).
