SPREWELL SEQUEL: GRIEVANCE SET FOR TOMORROW IN PORTLAND

Lawyers for the Warriors, the NBA and the NBPA "descend
on Portland today for [Latrell] Sprewell's grievance against
the league and team, which begins tomorrow," according to
David Steele of the S.F. CHRONICLE. The procedure will "eat
up most of this week, then spill over into next week in New
York," and a final decision from arbitrator John Feerick
"may not come until late March." The "front man" for the
Warriors is General Counsel Robin Baggett, and Steele writes
that "any talk" of a compromise or settlement "has
evaporated completely" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 1/26). In San Jose,
Jesse Barkin wrote that attorneys for both sides will
present their cases "in a fashion similar to a civil trial."
Warriors players, coaches and staff, "including" GM Garry
St. Jean, "are expected" to testify, and both sides have
"peppered their witness lists" with psychologists,
sociologists, and medical doctors (S.J. MERCURY NEWS, 1/24).
