BLUE JAYS CUT TIES WITH TELEMEDIA, SIGN SHAW TO RADIO DEAL

The Blue Jays "will announce today that their
affiliation with Telemedia Inc. has ended after 21 years,"
and that their radio rights will move to Shaw
Communications, according to sources of Marty York of the
Toronto GLOBE & MAIL. Industry "speculation" had Telemedia
offering the Jays "about" C$2.5M a year, "while Shaw came in
with a bid of about" C$3M a year. One source told York that
Telemedia had paid C$25-30M for its previous five year deal,
but had "offered the Jays considerably less" this time
"because of poor ratings during the past three seasons"
(GLOBE & MAIL, 11/26). Telemedia Program Dir Nelson
Millman: "I don't want to get into the numbers, but we've
lost millions of dollars on the Blue Jays over the past few
years. ... We made what we felt to be a very fair bid that
we could live with" (Longley & Zeisberger, TOR. SUN, 11/26).
