WTA TO RETURN TO BOSTON; SHOWDOWN LOOMING WITHIN THE WTAPA?

Babson College in Wellesley, MA, will host a $167,000
WTA Tour event for 32 women from August 10-16, three weeks
before the U.S. Open, according to Bud Collins of the BOSTON
GLOBE. CT-based Capital Sports, headed by Bob Arrix, will
operate the event. Arrix said a title sponsor for the
Babson event is "within site" (BOSTON GLOBE, 11/11).
WTA PLAYERS INSURRECTION? While an "overhaul" of the
WTA Tour Players Association board led to Chicago-based
Steve Zucker being named the new CEO, the board may now
"have to head off a breakaway by the top 10 players,"
according to Len Ziehm of the CHICAGO SUN-TIMES. Such a
move could come this week at the Advanta Championships in
Philadelphia. Ameritech Cup Dir Brian Fitzgerald: "I'd be
surprised if they [the top 10 players] went along. They
will object to the way it (the overhaul) was done more than
anything else." Zucker and new board member Steve Wild
denied a report of a "rift" with the top players. Zucker:
"This change was made for the best of all players. The
majority of the board voted for it." Three of the 14
players on the board are recent or present top-10 players
and Zucker said a meeting with the top players might take
place at the Philadelphia event (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 11/11).
