AFL RELEASES TOUGH DRUG POLICY FOR THE '98 SEASON

The AFL announced a comprehensive drug policy for the
'98 season which prohibits all illegal drugs and steroids.
A first-time positive test result will lead to a one-year
suspension, while second-time offenders are subject to
lifetime banishment from the league without any possibility
for reinstatement. In addition, a player convicted of an
alcohol-related offense, such as driving while intoxicated,
will be treated as a first-time positive test result player.
The policy does include a "compassion clause," where any
player who comes forward to disclose abuse prior to being
informed of any testing will receive a one game suspension
and the chance to participate in a rehabilitation program.
Any player who comes forward under the clause will not play
until completing the rehabilitation program (AFL).
