KELLY/HARBAUGH CLEAR AIR ON INCIDENT; NBC CRITICIZED ON ESPN

On Sunday's "NFL on NBC" pregame show, NBC's Jim Kelly
discussed details of his dispute last week with Colts QB Jim
Harbaugh. Kelly: "I said some things and I even told him,
maybe a little harsher than I intended them to be. We had a
little altercation, but it lasted about 10 seconds. No
punches were thrown, so everybody knows, no punches were
thrown. ... We both have a lot more things to worry about
than this, but again, we talked about it and there's no
problem" (NBC Sports). Harbaugh, in a statement, said that
he and Kelly have put the incident "behind us" (THE DAILY).
NEWS YOU CAN USE? On "The Sports Reporters," ESPN's
Tony Kornheiser criticized NBC for not disclosing the
incident earlier: "They covered this up. They had a hard
news story. They could have put Kelly on the air. Instead,
they hung him out to dry." ESPN's Dick Schaap added that
while NBC Sports President Dick Ebersol "praises Kelly for
his candor," he "didn't praise" NBC West Coast Entertainment
President Don Ohlmeyer "for his candor" when he talked about
the network's relationship with MLB. Ebersol: "I've said
that with hindsight, if we knew there was an injury to
Harbaugh, we would have reported it. But the injury
happened the night before the game, the two guys had spoken
on Sunday and apologized to each other" (USA TODAY, 11/3).
BULLETIN BOARD FODDER: In Rudy Martzke's USA TODAY
column, Ebersol said, "I find is absolutely hypocritical
that ESPN sat on the Gary Miller story and didn't report his
arrest for 72 hours, and then their high and mighty Dick
Schaap and his show criticizes us." ESPN Exec Editor John
Walsh: "We'll gladly compare our track record in sports news
to anyone, including NBC Sports. We reported on Gary Miller
as soon as charges were finalized" (USA TODAY, 11/3).
