          Veteran Chicago Tribune sports columnist BOB VERDI is
     leaving the newspaper to work for Golf World and Golf Digest
     (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 11/1)....Canadian TV producer RALPH
     MELLANBY was named Exec Consultant of the expansion NHL
     Atlanta franchise (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 11/2)....DON KING was
     profiled in Saturday's L.A. TIMES by TIM KAWAKAMI who wrote,
     "Never count Don King out of anything.  He isn't bigger than
     boxing, though it sure is a close call" (L.A. TIMES,
     11/1)....RICK PITINO is profiled in this week's NEWSWEEK. 
     Pitino: "I am a dreamer.  I had my first two Kentucky teams
     convinced we were going to the Final Four, and we were on
     probation those years" (NEWSWEEK, 11/10 issue).....Sports
     Psychologist BOB ROTELLA was profiled by Holly Brubach in
     Sunday's N.Y. TIMES MAGAZINE.  Rotella "has counseled a
     dozen athletic teams and organizations," and the employees
     "of some 20 corporations," including Merrill Lynch, GE and
     Time Warner.  Brubach adds that golf has now "become his
     specialty," counseling such pros on the tour as Davis Love
     3d, Val Skinner and Tom Kite (N.Y. TIMES MAGAZINE, 11/2
     issue)....NFLP Senior VP/Marketing & Fan Development HOWARD
     HANDLER is speaking to students today at the Univ. of OR's
     Warsaw Sports Marketing Center (THE DAILY).
