LEAGUE NOTES

PGA: After the Tour Championship at Houston's Champions
Golf Club, PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem "confirmed"
that the event would return to Houston. Finchem: "It's safe
to say we're going to work hard to schedule our next visit
to Champions, if the club wants us back" (HOUSTON CHRONICLE,
11/3)....In Chicago, Ed Sherman reports that the USGA has
voted to hold the 2003 U.S. Open at Olympia Fields Country
Club in Chicago. It will be the first U.S. Open in Chicago
     since 1990 (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 11/3).
OH, MEXICO: The U.S. National Men's soccer team played
to a scoreless tie against the Mexican National Team in
front of a sold-out Guillermo Canedo Stadium crowd of
114,400 (U.S. Soccer). In Philadelphia, Bob Ford examined
the "untapped" Mexican market for U.S. pro sports leagues.
Ford: "Mexico remains essentially an untapped well.
Baseball, basketball and football have each taken halting
sips, but none has mustered the courage to attempt a full
swallow." Mexican Government National Sports Commission
President Ivar Sisniega: "For any team to make it in any
sport, there would have to be some Mexican players. If
you've got no identification with the public, that's a bad
marketing mistake. That's why baseball could work well.
There are more than 20 Mexican players in the major leagues.
and it has a huge following" (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 11/2).
