FRANCHISE NOTES

Oilers Owner Peter Pocklington was in Houston yesterday
to meet with Rockets Owner Leslie Alexander regarding the
sale of the NHL team (EDMONTON SUN, 10/28). In Edmonton,
Robert Proznik, who heads one of two local groups making
bids for the team, commented on the reported plan that would
keep the team in Edmonton under Alexander's ownership for
three years: "They've got to think we're a bunch of idiots
if we're going to buy that story" (EDMONTON JOURNAL, 10/28).
NOTHING BUT NETS: "Without blueprints or firm backers,"
Newark Mayor Sharpe James "has asked the Nets to move to
Newark, hoping the popularity of the just-opened performing
arts center will lure the team from the Meadowlands in 2000"
(N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 10/25)....By the end of this week, the
Diamondbacks will pay the final installment of their $130M
MLB expansion franchise fee (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 10/26).
...The NHL Kings will keep their black, silver and white
uniform colors next season, but will add gold and purple.
The emblem will also change from its current chevron shape
to resemble a coat of arms (HOCKEY NEWS, 10/31 issue).
