          UNC Men's Basketball Coach DEAN SMITH, 66, will
     announce in a news conference today that he is retiring
     (Raleigh NEWS & OBSERVER, 10/9)....Former MLB P DENNIS
     MARTINEZ, on his "aborted plans to seek political office" in
     his native Nicaragua.  Martinez: "My wife told me, 'If you
     go into politics you'll get shot the next day because you
     can't keep your mouth shut'" (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 10/9).
     ...Former ACOG CEO BILLY PAYNE spoke to 500 Charlotte
     leaders at Leadership Charlotte's Lifetime Achievement
     Awards.  Payne said that MLB "is the next logical step for
     Charlotte."  Payne: "(But) you must look to sport in the
     context of its ability to enrich the lives of people -- not
     your bank accounts.  Business can never be the reason that
     your community embraces sport" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 10/9).
