NL PRESIDENT COLEMAN BACKS REDS IN SITE FOR NEW BALLPARK

          In a "cordial but terse" letter, NL President Leonard     Coleman "spurned" Hamilton County Commissioner John Dowlin's     call to intervene in stadium negotiations between the Reds     and the county, according to Geoff Hobson of the CINCINNATI     ENQUIRER.  Dowlin had written to Coleman asking him to back     the county's preference for the Broadway Commons area as the     new stadium's site.  Coleman responded: "The league considers     site selection to be a local matter.  However, the Reds have     a strong preference for the riverfront site.  We fully     support the Reds' position."  Dowlin: "I'm surprised neither     he [Coleman] nor the Reds has a real sense of urgency about     the Reds' financial situation. They're not in good shape, and     they act like it's ho-hum" (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER, 9/10).
