In L.A., Kings President Tim Leiweke said that team
Owners Edward Roski and Philip Anschutz "might sell the
Kings if they don't get approval to build the new arena next
to the Convention Center," according to Randy Harvey of the
L.A. TIMES. Harvey adds that former Blues Owner Harry
Ornest, currently Vice Chair of Hollywood Park, "says he
would put together an independent group to buy them."
Ornest: "I wouldn't do anything that interferes with what's
going on downtown. ... But if the Kings are put up or sale
and we're successful in the purchase, we'll build an arena
second to none at Hollywood Park" (L.A. TIMES, 9/9).
IN THE THICKE OF IT: Actor Alan Thicke said that he
will "do some work for the Kings this season," according to
Bruce Garrioch. Thicke: "They want to increase their fan
base and their celebrity base in the [L.A.] area and they
think I can help them do that" (OTTAWA SUN, 9/9).
FOX FALLOUT: In N.Y., Steve Zipay reports that after
Peter O'Malley sells the Dodgers to News Corp. "sources
speculate that he'll roll the dough into the purchase of an
NFL team for Los Angeles. A football-only stadium could be
built at Chavez Ravine, which O'Malley could lease from --
guess who? -- Fox" (NEWSDAY, 9/9)....A SACRAMENTO BEE
editorial commented on the Dodgers' sale: "Maybe the only
thing less appealing than the prospect of Rupert Murdoch
owning the Los Angeles Dodgers is watching the L.A. and
baseball establishments fall all over themselves endorsing
the deal. ... [T]he game will be cheapened a little further
as a result" (SACRAMENTO BEE, 9/8).
