FRANCHISE NOTES

Mets GM Steve Phillips said that OF Carl Everett's job
status with the organization "is not in jeopardy" while
Everett is being investigated for child abuse. No charges
have been brought against Everett (N.Y. POST, 8/14)....Bulls
& White Sox Chair Jerry Reinsdorf is interviewed in USA
TODAY. Reinsdorf said MLB owners and players "have to work
more closely to show the fans that they are the true owners
of the game," by "not fighting so much among ourselves. By
focusing on the game rather than the money part of it. By
making the game more interesting. Being more responsive to
what the fans want" (USA TODAY, 8/14). Reinsdorf also
"rebuked" a Chicago Tribune report that Michael Jordan was
offered $25M from the Knicks last year. Reinsdorf, in a
statement: "I was shocked [the article implied] that last
year's negotiations between the Chicago Bulls and Michael
Jordan might have been contentious. This claim is blatantly
false, as is the premise on which it is based" (CHICAGO SUN-
TIMES, 8/14). In Chicago, Steve Rosenbloom: "No one's saying
that White Sox Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf is trying to sell the
Sox, but is there anything to the talk that a couple of his
investors want out?" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 8/14).
