WNBA UNVEILS NEW PSA CAMPAIGN; ESPN ADS CRITICIZED

The WNBA will roll out a public service campaign
tomorrow focusing on physical fitness. The first spot,
running during Saturday's Mercury-Liberty game on NBC, stars
Mercury G Nancy Lieberman-Cline. A second PSA dedicated to
physical fitness, featuring the Monarchs' Tajama Abraham,
will debut later in the season. Both spots will air during
WNBA game programming on NBC, ESPN and Lifetime (WNBA).
SUBTRACT THE AD: In N.Y., Bob Raissman comments on
ESPN's ads, which feature a guy who "has a thing" for WNBA
players: "At first glance, the series of commercials seemed
kind of funny. But the more we see them, the uneasier we
feel. No matter how harmless the central character ...
appears to be, the fact of the matter is he is stalking
these players." Raissman suggests that it is time for NBA
Commissioner David Stern and WNBA President Val Ackerman "to
take a serious look at the marketing being done by those
associated with the league" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 8/1).
