WELCH DENIES ASSAULT CHARGE AND AIMS TO REMAIN WITH SLOC

SLOC President Tom Welch met the press on Friday where
he said he did not assault his wife during a July 9 dispute,
according to Mike Gorrell of the SALT LAKE TRIBUNE. Welch
also maintained that "he still can contribute a special
vision to the 2002 Winter Olympics." Welch will meet with
the Executive Committee of the SLOC board on Wednesday to
discuss the charges stemming from the incident. Welch:
"For 12 years, I have never wanted to do anything to hurt
this Olympics and this city. I will act with that in mind.
I hope (the board's) decision is made based on specifics of
Alma [his wife] and Tom, of where we're at and where we've
     been" (SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, 7/26).
