NHL TO COMPENSATE EX-EMPLOYEES BASED ON PLAYERS PENSION DEAL

          The NHL has "quietly agreed" to pay former league and
     club employees more than C$20M in owed pension money,
     according to William Houston of the Toronto GLOBE & MAIL. 
     The settlement, "reached three weeks ago but not announced
     by the league, comes on the heels of the much-publicized"
     C$41.1M pension surplus paid by the NHL to retired players a
     year ago.  In the recent settlement, the former employees
     are non-players, such as referees, coaches and trainers,
     "all of whom had the same pension agreement with the league
     as the players."  But unlike the compensation to retired
     players "which was won in court, this agreement was not
     litigated and, in fact, was based on the deal reached by the
     players" (Toronto GLOBE & MAIL, 7/23).
