MLB JOINT ANTITRUST PROPOSAL HAS EXEC COUNCIL BACKING

MLB's Exec Council has approved terms for proposed
legislation limiting MLB's 75-year-old exemption from
federal antitrust laws, according to Mark Maske of the
WASHINGTON POST. MLB sources said that last week at the
owners' meetings in Philadelphia, the Council approved a
proposal to lobby Congress to "limit -- but not repeal --
the exemption." The proposal would "strip" the owners of
their exemption as it relates to labor relations with the
players, and but "would leave it intact" as it relates to
franchise shifts, the minor leagues and broadcasting.
Maske's sources also said that the owners have asked members
of the Senate Judiciary Committee "to listen to concerns"
being raised by minor league reps about the "possible
effects of the legislation" (WASHINGTON POST, 6/19).
