FRANCHISE NOTES

The AFL CityHawks are profiled by Bruce Weber in the
N.Y. TIMES. Weber writes that the starting QB also works as
a mortgage broker and the WR/LB is also a barber: "Such is
the charm and cruel anonymity of the New York CityHawks, the
city's newest sports franchise and, in a sense -- because
they play home games at Madison Square Garden and not at the
Meadowlands -- its only professional football team" (N.Y.
TIMES, 6/11)....In Chicago, Carol Slezak: "That wacky old
Mike Veeck, he of Comiskey Park's disco demolition fame,
nearly pulled off his craziest scheme yet." Veeck, the
owner of the Charleston (S.C.) Riverdogs of the South
Atlantic League, had planned a special Father's Day
promotion -- a free vasectomy. Slezak: "There was so much
negative feedback in Charleston that the promotion was
canceled. ... File that one under surprise, surprise." A
Riverdogs spokesperson: "There was enough public sensitivity
to make us look internally and cancel the promotion"
     (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 6/11).
