LEAGUE NOTES

          The Padres will host the Cardinals in a two-day, three-
     game series Saturday and Sunday at Aloha Stadium in
     Honolulu, in what will be the first regular season MLB games
     played in Hawaii (MLB)....The N.Y. POST's Peter Vecsey is
     reporting that one reason the IRS began investigating NBA
     referees on undeclared income is that two of the referees
     "are (were?) going through divorces, and one or both of
     their wives ventilated the topic in financial disclosures"
     (N.Y. POST, 4/18)....President Clinton was interviewed by
     USA TODAY's Hal Bodley on the subject of baseball.  Clinton,
     on salaries and the commercialization of sports: "I don't
     like the loss of loyalty to team and community. ... On the
     other hand, the fact these men are making terrific salaries
     is in part a reflection of America's love of sport and also
     a reflection of the explosion in media attention" (USA
     TODAY, 4/18).
